“Kids can start doing their homework with ChatGPT”

The founder of Defined.ai admits to concern about some of the uses ChatGPT has been put to — OpenAI’s language model reached 100 million users in just two months — and warns of significant implications for sectors such as education. At the same time, she warns of a “private-sector monopoly” over these models, which demand resources beyond the reach of most companies. “That is what is democratically dangerous for innovation,” she stresses.

Daniela Braga also criticises the way these algorithms are trained on data available on the internet, potentially subject to bias and leaving out important sections of the population. On the future of the company she leads, she says she has not given up on a stock market listing, but keeps the door open to a merger with another company, provided the deal meets investors’ valuation expectations and the value systems match. Finally, she confirms that Defined.ai had to make redundancies last year.
