“Now that TVI is no longer the leader, we can take risks”

Rosa Cullell headed Media Capital for eight years, and is now leaving, by her own choice, to be replaced by Luís Cabral, the head of the group’s radio stations. In an interview with ECO a few hours after the board meeting that voted on the management changes, the Spanish executive is convinced that TVI will return to the lead. But she issues a warning: the way television is made has to change. And why did TVI lose the ratings lead? Cristina Ferreira’s departure was one of the reasons, and the response was that of a leader… “of not wanting to take enough risks”.

In future, she would like to see the programming and news departments more integrated, and she also thinks José Alberto Carvalho could play a bigger part in the channel. Rosa Cullell admits that one of the hardest moments of her time in charge was the Banif case, but trusts the channel’s news operation — “I was always on the side of the news director” — and believes that news, to be relevant, has to take risks and investigate.
