EDP has “more than 500 AI agents”, but lacks the “confidence” to give them full autonomy

EDP wants to position itself as one of the leading users of artificial intelligence (AI) in the energy sector, at a time when the technology has already moved from the experimental phase to large-scale use. In the sixth episode of the Podcast .IA (which you can watch at the end of this article), Nelson Pinho, the power company’s global head of digital & AI, reveals that EDP already has “more than 500 AI agents” in operation, but still lacks “the confidence needed” to give them full autonomy.

With Microsoft’s Copilot rolled out across practically the whole organisation – internal adoption is close to 70% – Nelson Pinho says the company’s bet on AI is not only technological but strategic: it is seen as a central tool for accelerating the energy transition and improving efficiency in a business increasingly dependent on data.
